Our promises

What we commit to. In writing.

Most registrar promises live inside marketing copy and break inside the fine print. Here are ours, written plainly, in one place, signed by the company that runs Modusdom — NY Screens Media LLC in Brooklyn, NY.

1. The price you pay today is the price you pay next year. And the year after.

Every domain we sell has one published price — and that price stays the same at renewal. No "$0.99 first year, $24.99 renewal." No quiet price hikes when nobody's watching.

If we ever raise your renewal price, your remaining domain life is free. Every year you've already paid for is honored at the price you paid, and we'll renew once more at the old price as our apology. Then if you still don't like the new price, your domain is portable — transfer out in one click with no fee.

2. No pre-ticked upsells. No marketing emails unless you opt in.

Nothing at our checkout is checked by default except the domain itself. Privacy is free. SSL is offered, never forced. Email is offered, never bundled into your total.

Buying a domain from us never auto-subscribes you to anything. We send you the receipt, the welcome email with your account login, and renewal reminders 30 and 7 days before expiry. That's it. No "exclusive offers." No daily promo blasts. No "tips" or "newsletters" you didn't ask for.

You can verify this in your account dashboard — there's a list of every email type we send, with a real off switch next to each.

3. Your domain is yours. Leaving is easy.

If you want to move your domain to another registrar, you can do it without contacting us:

  • Open /account/domain.php?d=YOURDOMAIN
  • Toggle Transfer Lock off
  • Click Email me the EPP code — arrives in your inbox within a minute
  • Paste that code into your new registrar's transfer-in form

There's no fee. There's no "retention" call. There's no 24-hour wait. Your remaining domain time transfers with the domain — the new registrar adds a year on top per ICANN policy.

4. No-fault exits, even though domains are non-refundable.

Domain registrations are non-refundable once the order reaches the registry — but you're never stuck with us. Two zero-cost exits are always available:

  • Transfer out for free. Move the domain to any ICANN-accredited registrar after the mandatory 60-day post-registration lock. No transfer-out fee from us, ever.
  • Let it expire. Disable auto-renew (or leave it off) and the domain simply lapses at the end of the term. No further charges, no cancellation hoops.

If you typed the wrong domain at checkout, email billing@modusdom.com immediately. If your order is still queued (typically a few minutes) we'll cancel and refund it. Once the registry confirms the registration, the year is yours.

Add-ons (privacy, SSL, mailbox, setup services) and monthly subscriptions follow their own rules — read the full refund policy.

5. What happens if Modusdom stops operating.

This is the question every customer should ask of a small registrar and almost nobody does. Here's the honest answer.

Your domain is not "owned by Modusdom"

It's registered through Modusdom, on the books of the registry (Verisign for .com, Identity Digital for .net, etc.), via our upstream registrar Tucows / OpenSRS — one of the largest accredited registrars in the world, with multi-decade ICANN escrow protections.

Three layers of protection

  1. ICANN registrant data escrow — every registered domain's contact + ownership data is escrowed nightly with an ICANN-approved data-escrow agent. This is mandatory for every registrar globally. If we vanished overnight, every registrant could be re-contacted by ICANN and migrated to another accredited registrar.
  2. Tucows / OpenSRS as upstream — even if NY Screens Media LLC ceased to exist, the registry record would remain at Tucows. You'd email support@opensrs.com with proof of identity (registrant email + previous billing info) and they'd transfer your domain to a registrar of your choice.
  3. EPP code in your inbox — anytime you want, you can request your auth/EPP code via /account/domain.php. If you save that code somewhere safe (password manager, printed and filed), you can initiate a transfer out from any other registrar without needing us at all.

If you want zero risk: do this today

Click Email me the EPP code on each of your domains, file the codes in your password manager. If NY Screens Media LLC ever becomes unreachable, you can hand those codes to any other registrar tomorrow and they'll pull your domain across in 5-7 days per ICANN policy — without our involvement.

About the bus factor

Modusdom is run by one person operating NY Screens Media LLC, a Brooklyn, NY corporation registered with the New York Department of State. We're not pretending to be bigger than we are.

What we offer in exchange is a registrar where, when something breaks, you email a person and a person replies. The trade-off is that we don't have 24/7 phone support — and if you require enterprise-grade SLA, you should pick a larger registrar like Tucows-direct (Hover) or MarkMonitor.

6. Your data stays yours.

We never sell, rent, share, or trade your personal information. Period.

The only third parties that ever receive your data are the ones strictly necessary to run the service — your domain's registry (required by ICANN), our upstream registrar OpenSRS (for actual registration), Stripe (for payment processing), and OpenSRS Hosted Email (if you bought a mailbox). All listed in our privacy policy with their roles and data-processing terms.

If you ever want to know what we hold about you, or want it deleted, submit a request through your privacy rights page — we respond within 30 days.

7. The price you see is the price you pay.

Modusdom's published TLD prices on /pricing are the total — no surprise renewal price, no "+$X privacy fee" at checkout, no "+$Y for the year 2 lock-in." If your cart says $19.99, your card gets charged $19.99, and next year's renewal is also $19.99.

We pay sales tax where we owe it (currently exempt for domain registrations in most US jurisdictions per current tax law); if that changes we'll show the line item explicitly in the cart and on the invoice.

8. What we're not.

To make this page useful instead of marketing-fluff, here's what Modusdom isn't:

  • We're not the cheapest. Cloudflare Registrar sells .com at registry cost (~$10.44 today). Porkbun is around $10.91. Modusdom is $19.99. We charge more because we bundle real human support, deliverability-audited email, transparent pricing, and continuity protections that don't exist at wholesale registrars.
  • We don't sell hosting. If you want a website built with the same provider as your domain, Squarespace or Wix is probably right for you. We'll register the domain and point DNS wherever you tell us — but we don't offer hosting.
  • We don't have 24/7 phone support. Email-only, business hours best-effort. If your business genuinely needs a 24/7 phone line, GoDaddy or Hover is a better fit (with the tradeoffs each brings).
  • We don't run domain auctions. If you want to bid on aftermarket / premium / expired domains, GoDaddy Auctions, Sedo, and Dan.com are where to look. We may broker an acquisition for you on request (/broker), but we don't run our own marketplace.

Signed.
